What does the holidays mean to you? For years my family has spent Christmas traveling mostly out of the country but sometimes local and close to home. Both of my parents loved to explore so Cancun, Bermuda, Miami and Costa Rica were all fair game. We never really knew where we might end up after Thanksgiving, but it usually wasn’t home. This was our norm and my brothers and I looked forward to adventures.

Fast forward to 2016. The year of the split. The year our holidays as were accustomed to it – came to an end. One of my brothers stayed with my mom and the other brother stayed with my dad.

The song, “I’ll be home for Christmas” took on a new meaning.

I started to switch up what holidays I spent with each parent and in the midst of it I started to feel the concept of "home" slipping away from me.

I really didn't know where was home since my parents suddenly lived so far away from each other.

As time went on I began to think of home as more of a feeling then a particular place. Wherever I was during the holidays that I felt genuine love and friendship was my home. This allowed the change in me and my family to be easier and more calming.

Often times changing our perspective or outlook on a situation can be difficult but the results are always more rewarding.

Happy Holidays and enjoy the time with your family this holiday!
